Before you pitch us your work, get
to know us a little by reading About
ENC and the Letter from
the Publisher. You might also find it useful to browse
our catalogue and read a
few synopses and excerpts of the works we have already
accepted and published.
If you think we are going in the
same direction, do get in touch. We’d
love to hear from you.
We are looking for full-length, character-driven
novels that contain elements of social and political satire
or commentary, offer unusual insights into foreign cultures,
have a strong element of humor, and tip a few sacred cows
along the way. We avoid genre fiction (e.g., murder mysteries,
horror, sci-fi, fantasy), unless the genre is but a context
for a satirical commentary on human condition.
To submit your novel,
please e-mail a cover letter and a brief synopsis of the
work — all in the body of an e-mail addressed to

Please do not pitch
us short stories, novellas, poetry, children's books, young
adult fiction, or nonfiction of any sort — in short,
anything other than completed, full-length (45,000 to
75,000 words) novels for grown-ups — and do not
send more than a cover letter and a cut & pasted synopsis
until we ask to see more: we do not open unsolicited attachments
under any circumstances.
We will not respond
to queries submitted by anybody other than the author. No
submissions from authors’ agents, mothers, ex-spouses,
next-door neighbors, or designated family members. Seriously.
These very basic guidelines
are meant to save us time and make our life easier. You
may choose to disregard them — in which case, we may,
and probably will, choose to disregard your query, because
it’ll just never work out between us anyway. Otherwise,
we try to respond to queries within 2-3 months.
Note: we do not review
multiple submissions.*

*A multiple submission is
a submission of more than one work at a time, or in rapid
succession. We do not reply to several queries from the
same author, all pitching different novels. If we love your
style and think that we might be a good fit but the subject
matter is not quite what we’re
looking for, we’ll
ask if you have anything else.
